Not difficult to work out that it was more planter boxes using the staircase spindles and tongue-and-groove boards from our neighbour.
Bit of a problem in that I was one spindle short so had to machine a length of timber to match - they wouldn't let me cut one out of their staircase!
UPDATE - now with New Zealand Flax plants (on special at the garden centre!)

They will have a pair of plants in (probably Cordyline) the Spring.

To enhance the rather bland porch area at our house we will have a "Versailles" planter with some shrubs or grasses (probably artificial)
The planter is work in progress - made with a few spindles left over from a neighbour's staircase renovation and tongue and groove boards from the same neighbour's old shed!
Net cost is a few screws, some glue and the wooden ball finials - plus some finish in due course.
The components - the spindles were machined with grooves for the t&g boards to slide into, and the corner posts screwed and glued to create the frame.
The woodwork finished and the planter in position for a visual check - probably to be painted/stained black to match the front door and blend with the tiles
My wife asked for this for her birthday . . . .
. . . . should I be concerned?
So I'm informed, it's a gardening tool.
Another weathervane - reliving a past love affair with Land Rovers - at the top corner of the garden.
Before - during - after : removal of three Leylandii at the end of the garden and trimming the remainder.
Next step is some sort of feature in the space, possibly using the tree stumps as a bench or table.

Lots of people have asked about the fence that we now have round all of the garden and, in black, on the front driveway - very simple, using treated roof-batten (not the coloured stress-graded stuff) which is relatively inexpensive.
Vertical battens were screwed to the existing concrete posts (needed an SDS drill) and intermediate vertical battens screwed to the fence panels. Horizontal battens with staggered joints using longest lengths of batten available. The top and bottom horizontals were screwed for strength, all of the remaining fixings were 40mm staples fired in from a battery nail/staple gun.
Spacing was set with small plywood blocks (one is visible to the right of tree and another at the far left of the batten being nailed)
Christmas decorations on our front fence, progressing from 2020 with the snowmen through 2021, 2022 to 2023 and the Christmas pudding . . . not sure what I'll add next year?
